2024-2025

Giriamo in tondo nella notte e veniamo consumati dal fuoco (eng. We go round and round in the night and are consumed by fire) is an exploration of existence in its cycle of birth, transformation and rebirth, through a reflection on the behavior of moths, nocturnal beings attracted and oriented towards a source of light that consumes and transforms their body. This behavior is called positive phototaxis and these creatures embody the same tension as human beings, who have always tended to cross the boundaries of sensitive experience and to confront the unknown, even at the cost of their own destruction. A destruction that does not prove destructive, but transformative, an overcoming of material limits that culminates in a condition in which life and death merge. In this context, light represents not only an element of destruction but also of creation as, through this same destruction, it reveals the most authentic meaning of existence: vulnerability as a source of intrinsic strength, the awareness of loss that enhances the present, the cyclical nature of life that transforms every end into a new beginning. The project takes a view of existence understood as a natural cycle in which everything is interconnected to each other and each species linked through indivisible threads of interdependence. However, nowadays, the human obsession to dominate nature purely for selfish purposes is causing a distancing from being part of a larger life cycle and light pollution itself is a major threat to biodiversity by altering natural balances. Giriamo in tondo nella notte e veniamo consumati dal fuoco therefore also becomes an attempt to restore this connection that is progressively fading. The fusion between body and light, in which corporeal matter becomes part of a larger entity, allows us to consider existence with a different gaze in an attempt to re-establish a universal connection.
